Although the development of Middle English is viewed as falling into two periods, early and late, the main thrust of the following pages is the latter. As with the Old English section, it is not intended to furnish a comprehensive description of the language as it was spoken during this period but simply to provide a general impression of English as it existed over eight centuries ago. With the exception of that devoted to Sounds, each page initially examines the development of standard English before turning to the subject ofdialect.

It should be noted that the Doulos SIL font has been used in parts of the following pages. If you do not have this font a free download may be obtained by clicking here.
